Japanese inspire glulam oak frame
Built in a constrained London site to create a luxury family home, the Niwa house deploys a highly refined oak glulam frame as its primary structure, stabilitised by stone walls that also provide thermal mass. The tectonic arrangement of the timber frame elements is influenced by the form of the traditional Japanese Torri gate.
The primary beams are typically carried on pairs of two-storey-tall columns, symmetrically cantilevering out and carrying a layer of joists above. The connections were carefully detailed to minimise any visible fixings. The structure grows from the lower basement level and its installation required careful sequencing to be possible within a tight site with tricky access.
